Closing the Achievement Gap
What is commonly referred to as the achievement gap, is the differences examined across groups of students across the academic sphere. These differences can be examined through the lens of grades, graduation rates of high school, graduation rates of college, drop-out rates among other things. Categories of students that are commonly referred in the achievement gap include sex, race, and socioeconomic status. In some of the listed categories above, some groups within in these may be perform higher than another group, but this is not universally so. Take for example sex with men and women. Men perform better on standardized tests than women, but from the perspective of college graduation rates, women have outpaced men in the past decades.
The problem with the achievement gap is the perpetual poverty and lower achievement status achieved by those who are disadvantaged by the school system. As teachers, is it important to provide the opportunities for all students to cater to their individual learning needs. By giving each student the opportunity to learn, the achievement gap can be narrowed over time to reduce the examined differences. School systems have strictly favored people with higher socioeconomic male Caucasians until recent decades and reforms in education. It is through this that the achievement gap can be narrowed and eventually be eliminated in the United States.
